1. Peranakans were the first to create this amazing delicacy? They were influenced by the Portuguese who introduced pastries and tarts, and because pineapple plantations were in abundance in the region, the creation of pineapple tarts were born.
2. Pineapple tarts are also known as KuehTae, Nastar and TatNanas and also popular among Indonesians.
3. Pineapple is called “ong Lai” in Hokkien which also sound like “fortune comes” in the same dialect thus; thought of as a fortune and good luck fruit. During Chinese New Year, it is thought to be prosperous or lucky to indulge in these. Nonetheless, during Deepavali, Hari Raya and Christmas, this is also a hit!

The latticing on top every tart is what the Peranakans call “tali” which means string. It takes a lot of patience and dedication to cut out narrow strips of the “tali” to give these tarts the elegance it deserves.
